9Marks Explained : A Letter From Mark Dever

Singing to Edify

Greg, I really appreciated your thoughts about the difference it makes when the saints show up to sing!  It does make a huge difference, and in precisely the way you mention.  I don't know if there is anything quite like hearing the saints sing with joy.  And it's all the sweeter when you know the joy is other-worldly.  It comes from Truth and Life above us, not merely emotion arising from us.  Can it be sweeter to hear the saints sing of the hope we have in Christ in the midst of trial and affliction?  Singing becomes triumphant then.  Nothing quite like it.  And, as you point out, it edififes.

That was the theme of Bob Kauflin's address, "Gathering to Edify," at Worship God '11 this year.  I really enjoyed his address for its emphasis on the practical ways we edify one another when we gather.  Worth a listen
