How hard should we push the gospel message in our evangelism?

9Marks

The gospel is not an easy message. It confronts people as sinners facing the judgment of God. It calls them to repent of their sins and submit to Christ as Lord. It’s understandable that our hearers will put up some resistance. So how hard should we push?

Who should evangelize?

While some might want to leave evangelism to the preachers, apologetic experts, or maybe just to the extroverts generally, the New Testament asserts that all Christians should evangelize:

What are several practices Christians commonly mistake for evangelism?

Personal testimony. Talking about what God has done in your life may encourage Christians and intrigue non-Christians, but it isn’t necessarily evangelism. Evangelism is telling what Jesus Christ has done to save every sinner who will ever turn from his sin and trust in Jesus.

What is evangelism?

9Marks

Evangelism is telling others the good news about what Jesus Christ has done to save sinners. In order to do this you must tell others that:

Why is meaningful membership important for evangelism?

9Marks

Meaningful membership is important because the church is God’s evangelism plan for the world. A church is like a radio transmitter, sending out messages about God twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

Book Review: God is the Gospel, by John Piper

Review by Nicholas G. Piotrowski | 03.05.2010

If you love Jesus, you will be affected by this book; the biblical truths trumpeted are deeply challenging in their implications.

Book Review: Soul Cravings: An Exploration of the Human Spirit, by Erwin McManus

Review by Jonathan Leeman | 9Marks Journal: The Gospel | 03.05.2010

This book leaves so much unsaid, to state it as charitably as I can, that what the person would gain from your book itself is not Christianity or the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Book Review: Simply Christian, by N. T. Wright

Review by Andy Davis | 9Marks Journal: The Gospel | 03.05.2010

Most pointedly, I don’t believe this book tenderly and clearly warns individual sinners of their peril or calls upon them to flee to Christ as the only remedy for their sin before God.

Book Review: The Purpose Driven Life, by Rick Warren

Review by Paul Alexander | 03.05.2010

Only the gospel should be proclaimed as having driving power for the Christian life, and only the gospel should enjoy primacy in the Christian life.

Book Review: Evangelicalism Divided, by Iain Murray

Review by Greg Gilbert | 03.03.2010

Book Review: The Jesus I Never Knew, by Philip Yancey

Review by Greg Gilbert | 03.03.2010

Book Review: Practicing Hospitality, by Pat Ennis and Lisa Tatlock

Review by Adrienne Lawrence | 9Marks Journal: Family & Parenting | 03.03.2010

This book will help those who are unfamiliar with the biblical idea of hospitality and provide a useful introduction to the concept.

Book Review: Churches that Make a Difference, by Ron Sider, Philip Olson, and Heidi Rolland Unruh

Review by Flynn Cratty | 9Marks Journal: Counseling in the Church | 03.03.2010

Sider, Olson, and Unruh seem to think that the mission of the church is to do all it can to evangelize, meet people’s needs, and transform society.

Book(s) Review: The Radical Reformission & Confessions of a Reformission Rev, by Mark Driscoll

Review by Mike McKinley | 9Marks Journal: The Emerging Church | 03.03.2010

Taken together, the two books constitute a clarion call to the evangelical church in America, as it adapts to its marginalized status in post-modern culture.
