Reclaiming Sunday School
The bottom line here is, if not Sunday School, then where? If you don’t have Sunday school, where are you going to teach people how to study the Bible?
Has our current culture so changed that Sunday school will not be able to avoid extinction?
Over the last decade our church has discovered an unexpected tool for changing a culture: adult Sunday School.
Sunday School makes you a better systematic theologian, which in turn makes you a better applier of God’s Word.
It’s true that the elements of fellowship, accountability, and missional living all contribute to the shaping of a disciple. But what gives these their power is the Word of God.
Reforming Sunday School
Who wants to sit and listen to a lecture about theology? Who wants to hear one person yack for an hour in the place of the community contributing? You’d be surprised.
For many Christians, Sunday school is a staple of church life. But what do you do when that staple isn’t as healthy as it should be?
How to Do Sunday School
Both Sunday school as an event or Sunday school as a group can work. But recognize the shortcomings of either approach and work to supplement them.
Do you have more teaching slots for adult Sunday School programs than you have teachers to fill them? If so, commit to the training of more men to teach.
You aren’t smart enough, entertaining enough, or talented enough to bring about real spiritual change. That’s actually good news, if you let it be.
Using theologically trustworthy curriculum is a great way to free up your and other church leaders’ time while still delivering solid supplemental teaching every week.
Miscellaneous Book Reviews
Newman has written an engaging book filled with wisdom and light.
For the pastor who’s kept up his Greek and is up for a workout, Conformed to Christ in Community could be worth a read, especially if you skim strategically.
This book is a heartfelt plea to reject the prosperity gospel and embrace the biblical message that saves.
Pastors will want to have not merely one copy of this on their bookshelf, but multiple copies to hand out to church members.
