9Marks Journal: Multi-Ethnic Churches (102 期:種族多元教會)

Satan has always exploited ethnic divisions. Consider how the Egyptians in Exodus despised the Jews or how the early Jerusalem church in Acts 6 divided between Greek-speaking and Hebrew-speaking Jews. Sadly, churches today often mirror their culture’s ethnic rivalries, whether in South Africa, India, or America. Too often, they forget they have a unique resource for overcoming such strife: the gospel.

Many evangelicals understand that possessing Christ’s righteousness means living it out in daily decisions. The same is true of the reconciliation we share with one another in the gospel (see Eph. 2:11-22). We are to “put on” that reconciliation. Failing to do so raises questions about whether we have truly been made righteous or part of “one new man.” This blood-bought reconciliation doesn’t require everyone to engage in a specific form of reconciling work, but it does call us all to participate in some way. Those who are one new man in Christ work toward unity. It’s just what they do.

This edition of the Journal is an invitation to join the work of ethnic reconciliation. Imagine churches in South Africa, India, America, and beyond not just keeping pace with their cultures in this area, but leading the way. What a testimony that would be to the power and glory of the gospel!

Most of the articles here stem from the American context, but the lessons are applicable globally. Brian Davis addresses the current cultural crisis and leads us toward hope. Jarvis Williams explores the link between the gospel and racial reconciliation. Trillia Newbell helps us recognize racism in our own hearts, while Isaac Adams and Russ Whitefield offer humbling lessons. Aubrey Sequeira lays out a solid theological foundation for multi-ethnic churches. John Folmar, Gustav Pritchard, and others provide practical advice on building such churches. Case studies from Juan Sanchez and John Smuts share insights from their own experiences.

Isaac Adams, Tim Chiang, and Patrick Cho offer challenging pieces for different church contexts, particularly White and Asian-American congregations. Even if you don’t have time to read every article, take a moment to pray for churches around the world. Pray that they will increasingly reflect the multi-national blessing promised to Abraham. Pray that our boast would be in Christ alone, and that our love would extend one step further each day.
