9Marks Journal: Vanishing Church? (103
What good is a church if it loses its distinctness? It becomes useless, fit only to be trampled underfoot. The increasing opposition to Christianity in Western culture is heartbreaking and worth addressing. Yet, God has good purposes in allowing nations—even those considered Christian—to oppose his people. One of those purposes is to sharpen the church’s distinctness. He seeks a radiant bride for his Son.
Our relationships within the church should stand out. The way we serve at work, treat our families, manage our finances, and even plan our vacations should all reflect our distinctness. As the culture drifts further from God, the more the distinctness of our churches should shine. While there will always be points of commonality with the world, we are the new humanity. Our neighbors should find us both familiar and strikingly different.
As a nation moves away from Christian values, churches have a greater opportunity to display God’s transformative power. Cultural opposition shouldn’t intimidate us—it sets the stage for God’s glory to shine through our lives. Furthermore, our evangelistic power is tied to our distinctness. When we blend in with the culture, we lose our prophetic voice. The doctrines of sin and conversion are precious for the sake of evangelism.
In response to cultural opposition, church leaders must neither only lament nor only rally for battle. While both have their place, pastors should preach hope, recognizing God’s purpose in allowing opposition. Though we don’t always know what God is doing, we can trust that his purposes for the church are rooted in love.
The goal of this 9Marks Journal is to help pastors adopt a fuller perspective on the growing cultural opposition. How should we think, speak, and pray? Though our sermons might be subpoenaed and florists fined, God remains sovereign, moving through every challenge according to his plan.
