Leading and Following – Session 06 from Church Essentials

This sessions comes from a course called “Church Essentials” 9Marks created with Lifeway in 2012.

What kind of leadership does a healthy church have? Is it a congregation that strives to ensure that the gospel is faithfully preached? Yes.

Is it deacons who model service in the affairs of the church? Yes.

But the Bible presents one more leadership gift to churches to help them become healthy: the position of elder or pastor, two words used interchangeably in the New Testament.

This position is different from other positions of leadership. A healthy church recognizes the spiritual authority of its leaders and separates those leaders out for specialized service. In doing this, a church expresses its faith in God, who ultimately appoints these leaders, and its commitment to follow.
